Confession, Repentance, Forgiveness, and Freedom

Here is what the Scripture says concerning sin and confession of sin in 1 John1:6-9.

If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

It is the work of the Holy Spirit to work in our life and show us our sin so that we can be free.  In John 16:8 Jesus said, “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:”

Romans 14:23 says that “whatever is not from faith is sin.”  When the Holy Spirit convicts (reveals) sin in your life you will want to agree with Him about the sin so that you can be forgiven and cleansed of its effect.  Here is a sample prayer.

Lord Jesus, I confess my sin of _________________________________________________ and ask your complete forgiveness.  I choose to acknowledge this sin and allow you to cleanse me of all my unrighteousness.  Make me clean and whole and release me from this sin.  I know I am helpless in overcoming it on my own, and unless you set me free I will never be free.  I ask this in the name of Jesus.  Amen.

If after you have confessed your sin to the Lord Jesus Christ, you do not feel completely forgiven, free, and cleansed you may have a couple of other needs.  One of these may be the need to rid yourself of bitterness, which can involve one or more of the following – unforgiveness, resentment, retaliation, anger, hatred, violence, or murder.  It is also possible that you may have experienced some demonic activity as a result.  This is often true with involvement with the occult, drugs, and prolonged forms of bitterness.
